What garment dyeing is
Garment dyeing colors the whole finished piece rather than printing onto it, so the color goes right through the fabric. You get depth, a soft lived-in hand, and a slightly imperfect, characterful result that a printed or pre-dyed garment can’t fake. It’s how you hit a specific brand color across a full run, or give new garments a washed, vintage feel before they’re even worn. Garments made PFD (prepared for dye) take color best.
Dye and wash options
- Pigment dye. Soft, faded, vintage color with subtle tonal variation piece to piece.
- Reactive dye. Rich, saturated, colorfast shades that hold their punch.
- Stone wash. Worn-in texture and extra softness.
- Enzyme wash. A smooth, soft hand and a gently faded look.
- Silicone wash. A luxe, extra-soft finish.
- Tie-dye. Bold, one-off patterns, no two the same.
Pair it with decoration
Dyeing pairs with print or embroidery: dye first, decorate after, for a fully custom piece. Discharge and water-based prints in particular sit beautifully on dyed cotton.
One thing to know: dyeing is a natural process, so slight variation piece to piece is part of the look, not a fault, and you can expect a little shrinkage, which we account for when we spec the garment. Common questions
Can you match a specific color?
Yes, within the nature of dyeing. We’ll get as close as the process allows, and run a strike-off for you to approve before a bigger run.
Will every piece be identical?
Close, but slight variation is the character of garment dye, not a fault. If you need dead-flat consistency, a pre-dyed blank is the better pick.
Can I print on dyed garments?
Yes. We dye first, then decorate.
What fabric works best?
Natural fibers, cotton especially. Garments made PFD take color best.
Does it shrink?
A little. We factor it into the garment spec so the finished size lands right.
